Sara Nelson was a small business owner looking to help her community by using the powerful tool that is local politics. I felt that my views aligned with hers, and in a decisive election cycle, I knew there was an opportunity to make an impact.
In Seattle, local politics are often a bitter battle between liberals. In this environment, candidates must find ways to distinguish themselves as things are much less clear-cut than in typical bipolar races. As Seattle has been shifting more and more towards the left, I felt Sara brought more common sense policies and an open mind as a moderate liberal.
While working closely with the Campaign Manager, Nathen Winch, I was named Community Outreach Specialist. I used my knowledge from endless summer camp field trips, basketball tournaments, and street fairs to give the campaign a better understanding of Seattle neighborhoods.
My favorite project was an interview I conducted with Emmanuel, who worked at Taquitos Feliz Dos, a local food truck. As a small business employee, he had a concern about public safety. Working late nights, Emmanuel said he experienced his fair share of violent outbreaks, and thought the current administration was not doing enough to protect small businesses. He was proud to support Sara Nelson for City Council and was kind enough to let me record a video of him voicing his endorsement in Spanish.
